Design for scale

Shared Protocols create interoperability: agents who adopt the same protocol can act together even without direct relationship. Design protocols so they work between strangers, not only between friends. This is what enables the network to grow beyond the trust radius of any single relationship – and it is what distinguishes a protocol architecture from a community of practice.

At the same time, we need to make sure that growth produces distributed capacity rather than centralised coordination. Possible models to achieve this include:

Federation. Network nodes can form a delegate circle – each one selects a delegate to participate in a shared governance space where they align policies, share learning, and evolve agreements that affect all of them.

Scaling. Governance scales by nesting circles within circles, each self-governing within its domain, connected by linking and delegation rather than hierarchy.

Mitosis. When a circle’s domain becomes too large or its membership too big for effective governance, it splits into two circles with distinct sub-domains. The circle structure reproduces itself, and the network grows from below.
